Diane Arbus
I don't really know why but I've always liked Diane Arbus's style of photography. There's something in each photo that gives off some unknown and unsettling tension. She really had a way of translating the uneasiness through each strategic shot. One of my favorite photos (in general) has to be "Child with a toy hand grenade in Central Park, N.Y.C." (the first photo). The way he's posed, the rigidity of his whole body, and the contortion of his face is unlike anything I've ever seen in any photo. I also like how Arbus went against the norm, and took photos of less popular subjects, including drag queens, dwarfs, and circus performers. Her personal life is also interesting, because she struggled with depression before taking her own life in 1971 and often attributes her growth as a photographer to separating from her husband, Allan Arbus.
I think Diane Arbus's style of photography relates to my final project because she was daring and took photos of things that some people were too afraid to shoot. Her style was also darker and had an ominous tone and I'd like to think my photography is similar in that aspect.
